Located in Calgary’s Inglewood neighbourhood, the YWCA (YW) Hub is a safe and supportive space for women to transition from crisis to stability. As the operational centre for YW Calgary, the city’s largest women’s association, it delivers vital programs and services that have supported women and families for more than a century.
After a flood destroyed YW’s former facility, the organization saw an opportunity to rebuild a new space within the community that would better serve its clients and staff. A female-led team approached the project with empathy and through a human-centric lens. Rooted in trauma-informed design, six guiding principles shaped the design from concept to completion: well-being, connection, inclusion, beacon, comfort, and safety.
The facility fosters healing, community connection, and inclusion through access to essential programming and services. A bright, welcoming entrance conveys safety and belonging with a sheltered overhang, long community bench, warm wood finishes, and soft curves. Two separate entrances provide secure access for childcare and staff, enhancing both comfort and privacy.
Collaboration with local artists weaves art throughout the building, which includes empowering portraits of women. A large community kitchen anchors the main floor, opening onto a front plaza and flexible gathering spaces designed for connection. The Hub also includes childcare, administrative, counselling, training, and residential spaces for up to 100 women, all centred around a secure, private courtyard that links every part of the facility.
The Hub has transformed both the YW organization and the community it serves, empowering thousands of Calgary women and their families.
“We are proud to open our new home. The Hub has been thoughtfully designed to support vulnerable women and propel YW Calgary forward. Kasian’s inclusive approach helped us achieve our ambitious vision.” – Sue Tomney, CEO of YW Calgary
