Stevenson Memorial Hospital: Expanding care with a strategic, future-ready design

Kasian is currently in the Contract Document Stage of this major redevelopment of Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston, Ontario. During the predesign stages of the project, members of the Kasian design team reviewed the Master Plan options that had been prepared by another Consultant as presented in the Stage 1.2 report to the Ministry of Health. The review concluded that the proposed Master Plan redevelopment was not reasonably constructible as it abutted the existing inpatient care wing and was directly connected to the existing hospital facility that needed and preserved to remain in operation during construction of the expanded facility.

Kasian evaluated the sloped and heavily serviced site and considered other design options to facilitate construction while maintaining full operation of the existing hospital facilities. During this assessment, a redesign of the master plan was presented to the key stakeholders. This new and separated design option permitted a separate but connected new structure adjacent to the existing building but also offered the opportunity for future expansion elsewhere on the site without impacting the new or existing facilities. Based on the revised design option the client and the Ministry of Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) supported the revised design and endorsed our team to proceed with the schematic design based on this new model. The new design significantly reduces construction risk and is expected to result in a reduced construction schedule. The design also offers enhanced green space opportunities for patients and staff preserved valuable access to natural light for those programs and services that remain in the existing hospital after construction.

The project’s Emergency Department (ED) encompasses various specialized zones to cater to diverse medical needs. This includes a high acuity zone featuring two airborne isolation rooms, two resuscitation rooms, exam treatment rooms, a mental health safe room, and eight care initiation chair/stretchers. Additionally, a Clinical Decision Unit is equipped with four exam treatment rooms, while the Rapid Assessment Zone facilitates care with six initiation chairs and four exam rooms. The overall gross floor area of the ED is 17,500 sf, excluding a four-bay ambulance garage.
