Basswood Senior Residences (previously Peel Manor Seniors Rental Building) is an important part of the Seniors Health and Wellness Village concept currently being developed by Peel Region – Canada’s second largest municipality. It provides much needed affordable housing to 198 seniors. Approximately 44% of the units are fully wheel-chair barrier free accessible, meeting CMHC standards, and include pull-under cook tops and sinks, accessible millwork, turning circles, and transfer spaces.
This building will be Brampton’s first mass timber building. It is a hybrid structure with the first story in concrete and the remaining eight residential stories in timber. Designed with ambitious Net Zero Emissions and Zero Carbon Building targets, the residence features a geothermal system, mass timber structure, and prefabricated building envelope.
Kasian’s design concept embraces natural beauty and honesty in materials, showcasing the raw and exposed elements of the building’s structure. By prioritizing the authenticity of materials and incorporating exposed features like timber and industrial aesthetics, we aim to create a space that exudes integrity and a connection to nature. Through the warmth of wood and the industrial accents, we strive to achieve a harmonious balance between modern design and natural elements, inviting a sense of openness and connection to the environment. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also highlights the craftsmanship and raw beauty of the building itself, setting a precedent for a space that is both practical and inspiring.
