Altus Group reimagined its downtown Calgary office by working smarter, not bigger. Originally built in 2012, the inboard offices and perimeter workstations provided a solid foundation for a fresh, flexible workspace. The existing layout became the springboard for a new central bistro lounge, where salvaged millwork and preserved services supported a showpiece island bar with upgraded finishes.
Less demolition meant a faster schedule and far less construction waste. Dark, solid wood doors and frames were kept, now striking against crisp white walls. Existing carpet was refreshed and paired with a new accent pattern. Light-filled corners became collaboration hubs with AV walls in bold Altus blue, offering privacy and integrated storage.
With a “reuse first” approach, the team achieved a lean $40/sf renovation (including consulting fees, permitting, and construction). In today’s market, where new office tenancies often cost significantly more per square foot, this result is rare. The final product makes no compromises on functionality – delivering a modern workspace that reflects Altus’ brand while freeing budget for upgraded furnishings and technology and keeping sustainability at the forefront.
This outcome was possible through collaboration. Kasian led the design with a keen eye for reuse opportunities, ensuring existing elements were thoughtfully integrated. Partnering with contractor Labbe Leech, who sourced readily available materials and proposed smart alternates, and with Altus’ in-house project management team, who stayed cost-conscious and engaged, the team delivered a renovation that maximized value without compromise.
