The Telus Spark Science Centre in Calgary is a key destination for education and exploration. Kasian’s collaboration began in 2011 with a master plan and interior work, including the planetarium theatre. In 2021, we were invited back to lead the renovation of the Infinity Dome Theatre as part of the centre’s three-phase revitalization. Drawing on over two decades of expertise in planetarium design—including the creation of the largest, most advanced planetarium in the Western Hemisphere—we transformed the space into a state-of-the-art, 360-degree projection theatre.
The renovation involved significant structural changes, including raising the stage to improve sightlines and installing custom-designed seating with extended backs to enhance safety and comfort. Kasian also added ramps for accessibility and worked with a code consultant and the City of Calgary to ensure safety compliance while maintaining aesthetic integrity.
The result is a fully modernized, inclusive theatre equipped with advanced projection and sound systems. Custom seating with vibrant upholstery and glass guardrails create an immersive environment. Despite supply chain challenges, strategic partnerships ensured the project’s timely completion, offering visitors a stellar experience exploring the cosmos from the heart of Calgary.
