Belleville Quinte West Community Health Centre: Designing a modern community health services centre

The Belleville Quinte West Community Health Centre (BQWCHC) is a three-storey collaborative health facility that serves as both a place of healing and a vital focal point for the community.

As part of the Community Health Hub, it brings together a range of clinical and mental health and support services within a new, purpose-built facility. Replacing temporary trailers, this thoughtfully designed space marks a major milestone for both staff and patients.

The centre includes physician offices, exam rooms, a laboratory, rehabilitation spaces, a training kitchen, waiting and education areas, and administrative support rooms, delivering accessible, integrated care to the region.

Aligned with BQWCHC’s mission of inclusive, community-based care, the design balances clinical functionality with wellness and education. The layout is simple and intuitive, clearly separating public and private areas to support smooth circulation and a sense of calm.

Set on a sloped site, the building is wrapped in a curved, elliptical ring symbolically embracing the community and enclosing a sheltered courtyard at the lower level. Natural light and outdoor access were prioritized, including a rooftop terrace that offers patients and the public a welcoming, restorative space.

A restrained material palette consisting of white metal cladding, grey concrete masonry, and warm wood finishes creates a clean, calming aesthetic. This simplicity supports the centre’s holistic goals without compromising comfort or approachability.

The design reflects salutogenic principles by promoting health, reducing stress and enhancing a user’s sense of control, confidence, and well-being. It successfully delivers a patient-first environment that is both highly functional and genuinely welcoming.
