On the traditional lands of the Blood Tribe in Stand Off, Alberta, a new vision for justice is taking shape. The Kainai Peacemaking Centre brings together longstanding traditions of restorative justice and will also be the future home the formal processes of the provincial court.

Under one roof, community members will seek healing through peacemaking and mediation while also soon accessing the services of a contemporary circuit court. The facility houses a round Indigenous court, administrative offices, mediation and hearing rooms, and spaces for teaching, gathering, and community support.

The building’s design reflects balance and connection, with its entrance oriented eastward while its curved form sweeps westward with views of the Rocky Mountains. This gentle, flowing shape creates a welcoming and restorative environment. Courtyards and outdoor gathering spaces are integrated into the plan, allowing ceremonies and cultural events to extend seamlessly between indoors and outdoors.

The architecture draws inspiration from the land. Exterior cladding and a rammed earth wall speak directly to the surrounding prairie and coulee landscapes, grounding the Centre within its environment. Inside, the material palette is guided by natural tones and textures that mirror the colours of the land and hold cultural significance for Kainai. Wood, and earth-inspired finishes create a space that feels both timeless and restorative.

Sustainability is woven into the design, emphasizing inclusivity through accessible planning and welcoming community-focused spaces. Carbon reduction strategies include a high-performance envelope, efficient mechanical systems, and locally sourced, durable materials that lower embodied carbon. Climate resilience is supported through careful orientation, stormwater management, and shading strategies that mitigate heat gain while maximizing natural light, helping ensure the facility endures for generations.

More than a courthouse or an office, the Kainai Peacemaking Centre is a place where stories are heard, reconciliation is practiced, and justice finds common ground with peace. Through collaboration with Elders, government partners, and community members, Kasian is helping to realize a sustainable space that strengthens the bond between people, culture, and land.
