Architecture is about listening to the client, collaborating closely, and creating vibrant spaces that reflect their vision and needs.
With over 22 years of experience in the AEC industry, I began my career as a junior architectural technologist in Saguenay, QC. Driven by a passion for continuous learning, I enrolled in the prestigious architecture program at Université Laval in 2003, pursuing the International Profile. This led to a transformative 1.5 years in Southeast Asia, where I studied at the Hanoi School of Civil Engineering, interned with local firms, and immersed myself in Vietnamese culture. This international experience broadened my perspectives, allowing me to explore not only Vietnam but also China and Laos.
Upon returning, I focused on high-density living environments, delving into fields such as biomimicry, swarm intelligence, economics, international politics, and accounting. During my master’s degree, I had the privilege of interning at Patenaude Trempe under the mentorship of Richard Trempe, a renowned figure in building science in Quebec. My thesis—awarded Best Thesis of 2009 by the professors’ committee—explored the intricate balance between solids and voids, opacity and transparency, and private versus shared spaces, examining how these dynamics shape sustainable living environments, cities, and even the clothes we wear.
This academic achievement led me to Kasian, where I have spent the past 12 years of my career. At Kasian, I have applied my attention to detail, curiosity, and analytical skills to specialize in two key sectors: aviation infrastructure and large-scale energy projects. My dedication to my work and clients has played a crucial role in strengthening the firm’s strategic presence in these markets.
As an Associate and Senior Project Architect, I lead complex projects while mentoring the next generation of leaders in our profession.

We asked, Jean-Daniel Bernier answered:
What makes a great design?
“A design in which a strong vision addresses every stakeholder’s needs without being a summation of all requirements. Great design is the art of synthetizing multiple requests and regulation into a simple and elegant form.”
How would you describe your leadership style?
“My leadership style is rooted in respect and active listening. As a leader, your role is to create space for others to occupy and thrive in. Very much like architecture, leadership is about creating spaces, celebrating voids/silences and putting the required guardrails in place to ensure everyone’s voice is heard.”
