As UBC Okanagan transitioned to university status, new facilities were needed to support its growing community of students and faculty. Kasian was engaged by UBC Campus Planning and UBC Properties Trust to build a world-class campus precinct that integrates Arts and Science programs and fosters interdisciplinary learning, research, and innovation.
Flexible classrooms and labs were designed to accommodate a wide range of teaching methods and protocols while strengthening the connection between students and faculty. Guided by the principles of sustainability, collaboration, and innovation, the design delivers adaptable spaces that support evolving academic needs.
The Charles Fipke Building links the east and west campuses, its atrium aligning with a pedestrian spine envisioned by the campus master plan to create a vibrant social hub. The Arts and Science Centre completes the science precinct, with a breezeway connecting the academic core to nearby residences. Locally manufactured precast panels helped expedite construction during the transition period.
To meet the highest sustainability standards, the project incorporates passive strategies such as displacement ventilation, radiant slab heating and cooling, geothermal systems, efficient fume exhaust, and heat recovery – earning 5 Green Globes certification.
Together, the two facilities have become an epicentre of innovation for UBCO, supporting over 9,000 students and staff.
“The planning and design of the two buildings was envisioned to enhance the connectivity between students, creating inspiring gathering spaces and a sense of activity throughout the campus.” – Michael McDonald, Consulting Principal, Kasian
“The Fipke Centre is an outstanding example of the highly sustainable and innovative designs we have pursued for new buildings at UBC Okanagan. We are becoming a model for anyone in the world looking for best practices in these types of projects. Five Green Globes is a remarkable achievement.” – Doug Owram, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, UBC Okanagan
