Construction is underway on a new 119,000 SF Long-Term Care (LTC) home for 124 residents on a greenfield site in Durham, Ontario. The design embodies Grey County’s vision for resident-centred care through various innovations: a choice-oriented kitchen-to-table foodservice model, laundry facilities that eliminate cross-contamination, a variety of indoor and outdoor congregate spaces, and resident rooms that support privacy, autonomy, and infection control. In addition to the new LTC, this project includes extensive new municipal infrastructure, low-impact development (retention ponds, swales), and a robust net-zero-ready strategy. The project team engaged in extensive consultation and a true co-creation process starting with the masterplan, establishing the parameters of energy and climate resilience, connectivity of residents, caregivers and community, and efficient, staff-driven operations. The design process was research-led from programming through detailed design to incorporate considerations for the best environment for care from the perspective of residents and staff. With thanks to our consultant team, including RPG, Dr Pat Armstrong, Ted Handy & Associates, Entuitive, EXP, Quasar, IHP, RWDI, Soberman Engineering, Forge Media + Design, Vertechs Design, and PFS Foodservice Solutions, we have created a long-term care home that will serve the unique needs of this small rural community.
“The core themes fit well with the vision for Grey County’s strategic plan: To be a place where people feel generally at home and naturally inspired, enjoy a blend of active healthy living and economic opportunity. The whole sense of feeling like a home, and the natural elements that we can connect and integrated into the site all aligns with the overall vision for the County.” – Rockwood Terrace UGM
