Douglas College set out to transform its existing library into a flexible environment that supports new ways of learning and collaboration.
The adaptive re-use presented challenges such as low ceiling heights, limited power supply across large floorplates, and a layout that still prioritized book storage over study space. Renovating within an active campus required a phased approach to minimize disruption and align construction with student schedules.
The goal was to redefine the entrance sequence, enable digital and collaborative work, and establish a true campus gathering place. The renewed library now serves as both a learning commons and a social hub, connecting dynamically to the adjacent atrium.
At the entry, faceted panels create a distinct threshold, while an angled doorway invites movement from the busy concourse. Layered ceilings, varied flooring, and integrated lighting guide students through the space—from open, collaborative zones on the ground floor to quieter study areas above. New utility channels embedded in the concrete floors deliver power and data throughout, allowing students to work freely and reconfigure spaces as needed.
The modernization continues a series of transformative campus upgrades, reinforcing the college’s evolving learning culture and creating a place where knowledge exchange and social interaction come together.
“In the age of instant information, academic libraries are transforming; more now the place to connect at the heart of the campus – Douglas College envisioned their library as much a social space as one for research and learning.” – Michael Mcdonald, Principal
