Following a masterplan and site development program with Fraser Health Authority, Kasian was engaged to design the expansion housing a new emergency department, Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR), and surgical suites for Peace Arch Hospital.
The design focused on delivering the best value through LEAN and evidence-based design strategies, supported by thoughtful material selection, structural concepts, and building systems that can accommodate future growth. During the process, a shift in the model of care introduced new departmental mandates, which were integrated into the new design.
Engagement with stakeholder groups helped shape planning options that balanced efficiency, function, and value. Construction was phased to allow the existing surgical and operating facilities on the basement and lower floors to remain fully operational, minimizing disruption to patient care.
The expansion also aimed to create a bold, modern presence on the hospital campus while reducing the emotional impact and institutional character typical of healthcare environments. The new emergency department and surgical suites represent a significant step forward in patient treatment, supporting Fraser Health’s commitment to improving care delivery.
Key benefits include improved circulation, enhanced visual management systems, and clear wayfinding – all of which increase operational efficiency and support staff in delivering safe, effective care. For patients and families, the design fosters comfort, confidence, and peace of mind.
