The Scarborough Health Network (SHN) Regional Renal Program is the largest in the province yet demand for hemodialysis continues to outpace capacity. Supported by the Ontario Renal Network (ORN), the proposed project is a medium-term option to address patient demand and capacity constraints for hemodialysis in Scarborough at the Centenary and General Hospitals.
Centenary Hospital involves the creation of 21 new hemodialysis stations, with new infrastructure allowing for the addition of a nocturnal shift if required. The design will support optimal workflow for the Nephrology program, infection prevention and control measures, and safety for patients and staff. Centenary’s new Dialysis Unit will be created through the renovation of existing space on Level 1, and the unit will be 7,115 square feet in size including an RO water room and technical space. The unit will include a combination of open treatment stations, enclosed segregation stations (contact isolation spaces), and one airborne isolation treatment room, thus providing different treatment spaces to suit the various needs of patients requiring dialysis on an outpatient basis.
At the General Hospital, through renovations to both the West Wing’s shelled space and the Crockford North Wing, the project will add 6 new hemodialysis stations to the existing capacity on site, while also creating 6 isolation/ segregation stations and 6 right-sized open stations that meet current design standards. The General Hospital’s Dialysis Unit expansion will be 5,962 square feet in size, which includes the reconfiguration of the existing RO water room and technical space to suit growing program needs. The expansion will include a combination of open treatment stations, and enclosed segregation stations (contact isolation spaces).
