We Asked, Chei-Wei Answered:
What makes a great design?
“A great design just fits. It fits to the environment and to the people who use it. When I see a really great building, I feel like my body is actually connected to it. The scale and the lighting are right, the material and the space, the other people moving through it—it’s a part of you. Of course, there’s the intellectual part, too: it all just makes sense. It’s not always even necessary to have a huge budget. Sort of like cooking: the $50 meal can taste better than the $100 meal if the chef is good!”
How would you describe your leadership style?
“I’m a hands-on guy who takes full responsibility for my team. I’m a big fan of teamwork because architecture might start from a single idea, but you quickly need many more ideas and insights and areas of expertise to bring that idea to life. Without teamwork, that can never happen. You have to fully respect and trust the people you work with—because you can’t do it alone!”
