Senior Land Use Planner, Senior Associate

We have an exciting opportunity in our Toronto office for a Senior Land Use Planner, Senior Associate to join us.

As an expert in land use planning, you will work collaboratively with clients and our architecture teams to make places better and maximize the value of real estate assets. We are seeking an individual who is an industry-recognized leader in this realm - with strong client relationships, an established client and industry network, and a desire to build this practice with Kasian.

At Kasian, you will:


  • Lead the land use planning function for Kasian, grow this business and the internal team
  • Provide thoughtful leadership in land use strategy, planning, and policy
  • Provide strategic planning and technical advice to stakeholders
  • Lead the land use planning process for multiple projects with a goal of working with clients to deliver a mix of development projects from inception
  • Develop land use plans for short and long term development opportunities
  • Research and summarize various technical documents (ie. planning, engineering, etc.) to evaluate opportunities and perform due diligence
  • Manage projects through the approval process including providing strategic advice and innovative solutions to land use planning issues
  • Lead the submission of a variety of planning applications and site plan designs
  • Prepare and submit planning justification reports, urban design briefs, draft Zoning By-laws, and draft Official Plan Amendments while adhering to strict deadlines
  • Prepare agendas and minutes for internal and external meetings to track project progress as well and on-going responsibilities and deadlines
  • Prepare and deliver reports and presentations to clients, stakeholders, and members of the public
  • Effectively liaise with consultants, municipal staff, and other external actors/stakeholders to obtain information as well as to meet or exceed schedule expectations for development applications and obtain approvals
  • Maintain professional relationships with planning authorities and statutory agencies
  • Research specific political, regulatory, and market trends to keep the business informed of potential changes within the development industry


Here’s what you bring to Kasian:


  • Minimum ten years of experience in a planning capacity with a consulting land use planning firm and/ or municipal government
  • A post-secondary degree from an accredited institution with a recognized planning program; MCIP or RPP designation is required
  • In depth knowledge of the Ontario Planning Act
  • A thorough understanding of Planning and Development processes including a demonstrated aptitude for analyzing complex contracts and other legal and regulatory documents, including official plans, zoning bylaws, growth plan and other applicable policy documents
  • Experience with analyzing site, building, and suite plans as well as other technical drawings
  • Knowledge of strategic town planning, socio-economic data, engagement, consultation, and master planning
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail while possessing a high-level strategic perspective
  • Initiative, and a passion for creating exceptional opportunities, places and experiences
  • A track record of managing multi-disciplinary consultant teams (including architects, design professionals, engineers, legal, project management, and real estate)
  • Project management abilities including successful delivery of project scope and fee, delivering targeted profit
  • Comfort-level interfacing with clients and other consultants on schedules, at project review meetings, to resolve issues, and manage expectations
  • Client facing skills with ability to communicate at senior levels and across a range of stakeholders
  • Deep knowledge of the development marketplace with national reach, key clients, and industry trends
  • Ability to support and lead business development activities through early client interaction, “scope of work” development, interviews, and on-going client maintenance interface
  • A desire to train, mentor and develop staff to grow their careers and the business
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team building skills
  • Clear, concise, and cogent writing as well as ability to put together and deliver compelling presentations
