Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and passionate Director of Digital Practice to guide our approach to digital practices across the firm. You will lead our continual development, application, and integration of digital design tools and methodologies, computational analysis, and applied technology to optimize workflows and best utilize our collaborative experience and expertise. This role involves the continual improvement of the quality and performance of our digital approach to design through engagement, communication, and mentoring of our diverse, and collaborative project teams.
As Director of Digital Practice, you will oversee the planning, developing, and optimizing of current and new digital strategies to improve our digital workflows through the advanced integration of BIM modelling and comprehensive processes, parametric planning tools, and the myriad of digital design and project delivery tools to strengthen our cohesive team-based approach.
Responsibilities
The Director of Digital Practice will be responsible for leading an integrated Digital Practice Team that elevates, supports and informs the firm’s design technology expertise, as well as other complementary enterprise technology solutions. You are a thought leader with thorough knowledge of design technology applications and process methodology, responsible for working collaboratively with design team leaders, managers, and IT to develop and maintain software protocols, workflows, and training regimens to support and grow our approach to design and construction technology.
The core responsibilities include the development and execution of an efficient and future-focused digital strategy, application research, application implementation, portfolio management, training (internal and external), team management, and technology research and development.
This role requires close collaboration with the Director of Technology to ensure firmwide consistency in digital platforms and software while maintaining professional relationships with clients, designers, consultants, contractors, and software developers. The Director of Digital
Practice will report directly to the Principal of the Digital Practice Group and to the Chair of the Kasian Practice Committee. You will also work with other key leaders in the Firm.
What you’ll be doing at Kasian:
- Developing and leading an integrated Digital Practice Team with the goal of staffing all production teams with the appropriate level of knowledge in technology applications; including but not limited to BIM production, VR, AR, AI, Computational Design, Cloud-based file management, and digital delivery. The integrated team consists of technology-focused staff and software super-users with the aim of efficient project delivery and distributed local support.
- Develop an education plan to elevate the design technology expertise of all design staff, including helping to develop and nurture effective BIM management capabilities.
- Support the project delivery teams in the development, deployment, and adherence to digital templates of practice. These include the development and evolution of assessment Tools & Training modules; the development and support of evolving digital Quality Assurance standards and Quality Control milestones through checklists and gateways; and the integration of digital practices through our Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform.
- Collaborate with Owners, Clients, Contractors and design team staff to develop a project BIM execution Plans and facilitate their implementation into projects and coordinate architectural model protocols for more efficient cleanup and integration.
- Oversee preparation and maintenance of BIM models, including maintenance of referenced models, BIM file management, and file transfer protocols, to allow simultaneous production by a large multi-person team without loss of productivity.
- Create modelling protocols that allow for the export of Revit content to analysis and visualization software and to other BIM software such as Rhino. Run scripts to improve workflow processes./li>
- Advise to legal issues pertaining to BIM, VDC, and the associated risks involved with BIM information security management across different markets.
What you bring to Kasian:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a similar design profession
- 10+ years of progressive design technology leadership experience within AEC companies
- Collaborative leader with a proven track record of growing and leading teams.
- Demonstrated proficiency with digital tools including Revit, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Navisworks, Rhino, and Adobe Creative Suite, among others. Knowledge of Dynamo, Grasshopper, 360 Glue, or other parametric, rendering or coordination tools are a plus.
- Familiarity with the suite of digital project and construction administration tools available, including digital specifications and document management is a distinct plus.
- Excellent team leadership, consensus-building, and creative alternative-generation skills for driving solutions with team buy-in, while listening to the needs of each individual team.
- Effective and collaborative communication skills are essential for team-based working, including verbal and written communication with clients, and teaching others about best practices in digital environments.
- Excellent planning and organization skills are required for our fast-paced environment.
- Highly motivated, proactive, and willing to take on new challenges, including the ability to work under pressure and deadlines.
