Rebranding a culture and workspace environment
Hastings and Prince Edward Counties Health Unit (HPECHU) selected Kasian to plan, design and oversee the redevelopment of their main office in Belleville, Ontario. The Health Unit provides clinical, educational, inspection and enforcement services to a population of over 140,000 residents. The original plan was to renovate their existing 22,800 sf office/clinical space and expand the facility with a 6,000 to 7,000 sf addition. However, Kasian presented the option for an entirely new Health Unit in a different footprint on the same site, which the client preferred.
The previous facility was a typical mid-1980’s institutional construction, which was beyond capacity for its staff and severely lacked in necessary storage space. Internal heating, cooling, and ventilation were poor, traffic flow was inefficient, and available space was under-utilized. HPECHU chose to partner with Kasian to assist them with meeting immediate and long-term goals of consolidating staff, maximizing utilization, and designing a highly functional, energy-efficient space.
With a new building there was an opportunity to rebrand the culture and workspace environment. The Health Unit leadership team embraced the change concept and provided many opportunities for staff input to cultivate the concepts that resulted in open work areas, flexible work spaces, open concept private offices, secure and confidential client clinical space, and large, naturally-lit educational and training spaces.
The resulting facility has an expected useful life of over 30 years with an increased cost of less than 5% of the original renovation scope, including relocation costs – a clear success for Client, Consultants and Community.
