The South Health Campus (SHC) draws its name from the collection of interconnected buildings providing health, wellness, education, and research services to this key area in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The SHC master plan’s scope is for 644 inpatient beds and projected outpatient visits of 800,000 per year. Specialized services include women’s health, mental health, pediatrics, cardiac sciences, trauma, and several day hospital programs.
The 44-acre greenfield site consists of two parcels of land, one of 33 acres and one of 11 acres, both located in the planned suburban southeast community of Seton, which provides housing and services for 150,000 people.
A town centre commercial and retail hub, as well as medium density housing is planned around the hospital site. Immediate connections to all parts of the city are reinforced with public transit service and a future light rail transit station planned for the surrounding community.
Master planning for the South Health Campus began in 2006 with the development of a placeholder program that determined area and phasing. This project grouped components into diagnostic & treatment, outpatient services, hospital (inpatients), and services. In addition to these funded project areas, the program identified areas required for non-funded future components, such as education, technology, medical office buildings, and research.
