One of the most technologically advanced planetariums in the world, the design of this domed theatre was created to blend in with the existing classical building which was constructed in early 1954.
The renovation included converting the planetarium theatre and flanking wings into an exhibit gallery, and renovating all existing spaces into public amenity and display space.
The multimedia immersive theatre includes a new 24.2-metre-diameter tilted dome, 283 seats, live performance stage, projection room, state-of-the-art projection cove (to accommodate a large number of projection technologies), production spaces, and ancillary support spaces.
Some of the technologies being incorporated include Digistar 3 (E&S), G10 High Luminosity projectors (Barco), SkyVision and Digital Sky projection systems (Sky-Skan), SPICE Automation (Sky-Skan), 2PI slide projector (Jannes), laser projector (Laser Fantasy), and 1570 large-format, high-resolution film projector (Iwerks).
A new south wing includes two floors of flexible exhibit space and a third floor of classroom and administration office space.
The theatre saw over 300,000 visitors in its first year.
