Kasian Calgary is incredibly proud of the latest construction milestone for the new YW Hub, which is on track for completion in April 2019. Capital funding of $8.6 million was just announced and will go towards the construction of 100 transitional shelter homes at YWCA Calgary’s new Hub Facility. The space will provide support to hundreds of women and children in the city who are fleeing abuse or living in poverty. Seniors and Housing Minister Lori Sigurdson made the announcement on March 26 and says all Albertans deserve a safe place to call home. “I know from experience that a safe and affordable home can change lives,” she said. “This investment will offer hundreds of women and children a safe place to stay while they find a permanent place to live.”
The design for the development of the site and the new facility focus on creating a sense of sanctuary to promote healthy lifestyles and wellness for all building occupants and visitors to the site. This development endeavors to provide a sense of safety, resiliency, comfort and inclusivity of all users, a connection to the surrounding community of Inglewood, and a beacon highlighting the importance of the work that the YWCA engages in with the individuals that they serve.
The project represents the transformation of the YWCA of Calgary’s organization and seeks to create a facility that allows the YWCA to achieve and expand their abilities to serve the needs of women and their families. It is also intended as an architectural contribution to the urban fabric of the community of Inglewood and Calgary as a whole. The new YW Hub facility will provide accessible support for women and their families that include transitional housing, counselling, education and employment skill training, child development and parenting programming as well as support services to manage the organization. Congrats to the entire team for this achievement.
