Second year Architectural Technology students at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) were tasked with designing an innovative and functional bank branch that incorporates concepts of environmental sustainability.
The winners were announced last week at the seventh annual NAIT Architectural Technology student design competition awards reception, sponsored by ATB Financial and Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd. There were 11 prizes totaling $9,000 (including the Top 10 entries and the Kasian Award for Design Innovation).
The fictional branch design was done for ATB Financial on a site located in Old Strathcona, Edmonton. Design entries were judged based on concept, aesthetics, functionality, sustainability and corporate identity.
Jim Dobie, Senior Associate in the Kasian Edmonton office was a judge for the competition; he was impressed with the range of well conceived designs, and said “The graphic presentation skills that the students have developed are exceptional. The ten finalists had the opportunity to present their designs in person to the judging panel and they did so to a high standard. Both first and second round judges commented on how difficult it was to identify the winners and how impressed they were with the overall quality of the work that was presented.”
