SURREY — Twenty-three trophies were given out to groups, businesses and individuals on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at the new Centre Stage at City Hall for the City Awards.

The City Awards, which are meant to recognize the achievements of those who are helping “shape Surrey as a city of the future,” were first started in 2011. This year, there were six categories for the awards, including Heart in the City, Beautiful City, Green City, Clean Energy City, Heritage in the City and New City Design.

“I would like to congratulate all the winners for their personal and collective achievements,” said outgoing Mayor Dianne Watts in a release, who was at the event to award all of the winners.

“Their tireless efforts have mad a real difference within the community and the City of Surrey.”

Among the winners was community group Friends of the Grove, headed by Newton-resident David Dalley, who helped re-beautify the grove after the notorious killing of hockey mom Julie Paskall in the area.

“The Friends of the Grove award reflects the work of many who have come
together to create a safer and more vibrant space in Surrey,” Dalley told the Now.

He also noted that the trophy will change hands on a rotating basis to be enjoyed by those who helped the project. “At this point in Surrey’s transformation, we don’t need more leaders and
followers. We need leaders that create other leaders. When I look at the
list of City Award nominees and recipients, I see leaders that are creating
more leaders. I find that very inspiring,” he said of his fellow award winners.

Twenty-three winners were chosen in the second incarnation of Surrey’s City Awards.
