Toronto, ONT – September 26th, 2013 – On the back of the recent Award of Excellence and Best in Show awards received at the Interior Designers Institute of BC (IDIBC) SHINE Awards last Friday, Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd (Kasian) has received an additional award for the Esker Foundation Gallery. Last night the Gallery’s design received the coveted Award of Merit at the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) Awards.
As the largest privately funded, non-commercial gallery in Calgary, the Esker Foundation Gallery is a model example of design excellence combined with social consciousness. The Gallery seamlessly combines leading edge advancements in gallery practices and educational aspirations. Located in Inglewood, one of Calgary’s oldest neighborhoods, the Gallery is influential in its cultural reach and inspirational to the surrounding neighborhood and arts community.
The Gallery is unique in that it possesses a sense of openness in both its exhibit selections and breadth of audience. Completely free to the public, the Esker Foundation Gallery offers a level of accessibility far beyond that offered by the majority of museums and galleries in Calgary. The main gallery eschews complexity to deliver open, double storey spaces that encourage exploration and discovery. Over 800 linear feet of fixed and moveable walls, anchored by wide-plank oak floors, provide an adaptable canvas to enhance collections. Most notably, located on the mezzanine level, the one-of-a-kind floating steel “Nest” hovers above the exhibits, ever changing in colour. The “Nest” is aesthetically robust yet functional, embodying ‘found objects from an esker’ while acting as a meeting space for gallery users and staff.
The Gallery has garnered critical acclaim, most notably as finalist at Interior Design magazine’s Best of Year Awards in 2012, and the IDIBC 2013 SHINE Awards’ Best in Show. “We are incredibly humbled to have received such recognition this week for the Esker Foundation Gallery’s design,” says Lois Wellwood, Principal in Charge for the design of the gallery.
Janine Grossmann, current President of ARIDO and Principal at Kasian, expressed delight upon learning that the independent panel of judges administering the awards had selected the Esker Foundation Gallery as one of the recipients. “It was very special moment awarding the Kasian team with an Award of Merit at the ARIDO Awards gala last night. I think that this award, along with the other honours received at the IDIBC SHINE Awards this past week, are a true testatment to the quality of work our firm produces both nationally and internationally.”
